iOS 17 features that are Shared and Adapted from Android

Millions of people globally utilize operating systems (OS) to operate their mobile phones. The mobile phone realm consists of two major operating systems, namely IOS and ANDROID, which compete against each other. Often, these systems are compared in a battle for supremacy, yet they still incorporate certain features from one another. One notable feature that iOS borrowed from Android is the “Control Center” or “Quick Settings” functionality. In this article, we will learn about some new features in the IOS 17 software that are similar to features found in Android. Let’s start!

Offline Maps

Apple has included an offline Maps feature in the newest version of IOS 17, which allows users to access directions and information for a selected area without an internet connection. Interestingly, this marks the first time that Apple has incorporated offline maps into its native navigation app. While this feature has been a staple on Google Maps and various other mobile navigation services, it’s now seamlessly integrated into the Apple Maps experience.

Face Time Messages

Another feature is FaceTime messages that allow users to send both audio and video messages during Facecalls. In its latest addition, IOS 17 introduces the option to leave audio or video voicemails when a FaceTime call goes unanswered.

While this feature is a significant addition to FaceTime, it’s worth noting that Google has been offering audio and video messaging through its Duo app on Android (and iOS) since as early as 2018. This feature has continued with the integration of Duo into Google Meet, where users can also enjoy the benefits of audio and video messaging.

Standby mode while Charging

This feature, providing glanceable information such as time, notifications, and customizable widgets, adds a dynamic touch to the charging experience. It even doubles as a digital photo album, offering a visually appealing presentation.

It’s worth noting that the concept of screen savers is not entirely new, having existed on PCs since the 1980s to prevent burn-in of static images. Android’s screen savers, introduced with Daydream mode in 2012 and later known simply as screen savers from 2016, offer similar functionalities with clock setups, photo rotations, color changes, and more. While iOS 17’s Standby mode adds a unique flair, Android users can explore their device’s settings to enjoy similar features during charging, bringing a touch of personalization to their charging experience.

Live voice mail

The live voicemail feature prompts callers to leave a screen-calling message rather than a traditional voicemail. Depending on the phone model, certain callers may automatically be asked to leave a screen-calling message, or users can manually send the call to Call Screen for each call, giving the option to ignore or answer.

IOS 17  empowers iPhone users with the ability to send live voice messages in real-time, complete with automatic transcription.

Again Apple is not the first to bring this cool addition, Android’s Call Screen, available since 2018, is a feature within Google’s Phone app that offers live transcriptions of calls.

Check-in

iOS 17 introduces a notable security feature known as Check-In, designed to keep users connected with friends and family during their journeys. This feature enables users to provide real-time updates about their ongoing travels, automatically sharing essential details such as the current known location, battery level, cellular signal, and more. The Check-In feature is a valuable addition to iOS, enhancing communication and ensuring that loved ones stay informed.

In 2020, Google introduced a similar feature called Safety Check within its Personal Safety app. Both the Check-In feature on iOS 17 and Google’s Safety Check demonstrates the tech industry’s commitment to using advanced features to enhance user safety and connectivity, regardless of the mobile operating system being used.
